You want to let Kate sleep, but you’re afraid of what might be out there. Gently, you shake your sister. She slowly opens her eyes, confused and groggy.

To your right, the leaves rustle again.

“Do you hear that?” you whisper.

“Yes,” she answers, sounding more than a little nervous.

“What do you think it is?”

Kate hesitates. “I don’t know.”

A few feet away, something growls.

You hear soft, light footsteps. The sound moves closer.

Panic builds within you. It takes control. You want to cry. You want to scream. You want to get away.

Something brushes your hand. A leaf? A bug? A deadly creature? It doesn’t matter. It’s enough to get you onto your feet.

You violently tug Kate off the ground, almost pulling her arm out of socket. “Get up,” you scream. “Run!”

You push her in front of you. She dashes into the nearest gathering of trees. You follow.

Your body is stiff with cold. The cuts and scrapes from yesterday sting and stretch. Everything hurts. You want to stop moving. But angry snarls are following you. Is it a bear? Something worse?

A loud “CRACK” fills the air, echoing through the night. It sounds as if a large branch has snapped in half. Kate lets out a piercing scream. She tumbles to the ground in front of you.

You stop in your tracks.

What happened? Where is she?

You crouch down, crawling toward the sound of her moans. “Kate,” you whisper, as loudly as you dare. “Kate, where are you?”

“Jamie, my leg. It hurts!” Her words rise into a scream of anguish.

You fumble through the dirt and muck, until at last your hand brushes against her leg. She screams again.

“I’m sorry, but we have to move. Something’s coming, and we never should’ve run. But now we have to move.”

“I can’t.”

“I’ll help.” You grab her arm, pulling her off the ground. At first, she’s able to push upward with her good leg. But then her injured leg shifts, and you hear the bones grind beneath her skin.

She shrieks and collapses, crying. “I can’t, Jamie. It hurts, it hurts, it hurts.”
